Instant Forms beat landing pages for cold residential traffic
Almost all of our residential solar volume comes from Meta Instant Forms rather than a website landing page. A form inside Facebook is two taps and pre-filled; a landing page asks a cold visitor to wait for a page to load on a budget Android phone and then type their number.
The trade-off is real and you should know it: an Instant Form lead has done less work, so it is less committed. That is a sales-process problem, not a reason to avoid the format.
What residential solar leads actually cost
| Market | Campaigns / ads | Leads | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardoi | 1 campaign | 98 | โน5.86 |
| Varanasi | 6 campaigns | 813 | โน10.87 |
| Prayagraj | 11 camp + 2 ads | 9,598 | โน20.13 |
| Kanpur | 13 camp + 4 ads | 13,435 | โน22.37 |
| Lucknow | 20 camp + 4 ads | 8,419 | โน24.81 |
| Delhi and Noida | 12 ads | 561 | โน63.11 |
Every figure has a published screenshot behind it on the solar marketing page. The range is deliberate โ it is the most useful thing we can show a residential installer planning a budget.
The cheap-lead trap
Our Varanasi account produced leads at โน10.87. That number sells itself, and it is also the one we are most careful with.
A โน11 lead arrives with a name and a number after two taps. No website visit, no research, possibly no memory of filling the form an hour later. It needs the first call within minutes, two or three attempts at different times, and a WhatsApp follow-up for the ones who never answer. Businesses that treat a โน11 lead like a โน200 referral get poor results and blame the campaign.
The figure we would quote if the industry used it is cost per connected lead. An โน11 lead reached 30% of the time costs โน37 to actually speak to. A โน40 lead reached 80% of the time costs โน50. Suddenly the two markets look similar โ which is closer to the truth.
Numbers to track beyond cost per lead
| Metric | Why it matters | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Connection rate | How many leads you actually reach | Your call log, not the ads dashboard |
| Time to first call | The biggest single lever on connection rate | CRM timestamp |
| Site-visit rate | Whether interest survives a phone call | Sales team follow-up |
| Cost per connected lead | The honest version of CPL | Spend divided by leads reached |
Qualifying without killing volume
The instinct when leads are poor is to add questions to the form. It works, but it costs volume immediately. A better first move is usually a single qualifying question โ roughly what is your monthly electricity bill โ which filters out the genuinely unsuitable without adding friction for everyone else.
Narrowing the audience is the other instinct, and our data argues against it. In Mahendragarh, open targeting produced leads at โน32.69 while the narrowed version cost โน53.85 and reached a third as many people.
When to add Google Search
Once the sales team can handle the Meta volume, Google catches the people already comparing quotes. In our Lucknow solar account that cost โน339.19 per conversion at a 6.67% click-through rate โ far more per lead, and usually further down the funnel.
Adding Google before you can handle Meta volume is the common sequencing mistake. It does not fix a follow-up problem; it just makes the problem more expensive.
A realistic starting plan
One city. Two genuinely different creative angles, two ads each, identical budgets, run for two to three weeks. Instant Forms, open targeting. Call every lead within minutes and log connection rate from day one. Only then decide whether the market is cheap, expensive, or badly served by the creative โ because those three look identical in the first week.
Frequently asked questions
What is a realistic cost per lead for residential solar?
Across our Indian markets it ranged from โน5.86 to โน63.11, with most UP markets between โน20 and โน40. Metro markets cost considerably more.
Are Instant Form leads lower quality than website leads?
They are less committed, because the form is easier to fill. That is a follow-up problem rather than a reason to avoid them โ speed of first call matters far more than the format.
How do I stop getting unqualified solar leads?
Add one qualifying question, usually about monthly electricity bill, before adding several. Each question costs volume, so add them one at a time and watch what happens to both cost and connection rate.
Should I narrow my audience to improve lead quality?
Test it rather than assume it. In our Haryana accounts open targeting beat narrowed targeting on both cost per lead and reach.
How fast should we call a solar lead?
Within minutes where possible. Time to first call is the single biggest lever on connection rate, and it matters more the cheaper the lead is.
Is Google Ads worth it for residential solar?
Once you can handle Meta volume, yes. Expect a very different price โ our Lucknow solar search conversions cost โน339.19 each.
Performance figures on this page come from selected campaigns and reporting periods in our portfolio records through September 2026. Several screenshots are filtered views of the same ad account, so totals are calculated from distinct accounts only. Results vary with market, budget, targeting, offer, competition and sales follow-up.
